Nawanshehar is a city which is located in the State of Punjab. It is an important religious center for Hindi devotees. It is also known for its ancient architecture and few buildings that were built during the middle ages. The city is famous for five havelis or forts which were built by Nausher Khan. The town is named after him and these havelis can still be seen today. Many parts of the district were rules by the Rajputs for a certain period of time and their influence can still be seen today. Bhagat Singh, the famous freedom fighter hails from this district. The city is located on the banks of the River Sutlej and there are many picnic stops that are available in the surrounding areas. The city is accessible easily from the other cities and towns in Punjab. Generally roads are good and there are railway services as well. There are many places of religious significance in the district surrounding Nawanshehar. Some of them are the Chran Kanwal Gurudwara, Nanak Sar Gurudwara, Baba Balraj Mandir and many others. Many of the Gurudwaras were built a few centuries ago and they are example of outstanding architecture. The surrounding areas are home to many agricultural villages.

HistoryEdit

Nawanshahr got district status after a long and consistent struggle by its people. The main credit goes to Late Sh. Dilbag Singh former Agricultural and Forest Minister Punjab who actualized the dream of the people of Nawanshahr. He was a known personality and was first elected as a Member of Legislative Assembly from Banga Assembly Constituency in 1962. Since 1967, he had contested election from this constituency and had raised his voice in favour of achieving district status for Nawanshahr.

By Train : There are a few trains to Nawanshehar, however they are on irregular timings and there are no direct trains from Mohali.

By Bus : There are frequent buses from Mohali to Nawanshehar. They are available from the Mohali bus terminus. They are usually cheap are the best option for travelers who are on a budget. However the buses may be crowded and travelers who are carrying heavy luggage may find it extremely difficult. They cost around RS 50 for the trip.
