This baroque, wooden Orthodox Church is one of the oldest and the most beautiful temple on Podlasie. The temple was built at the turn of 17th and 18th centuries.
Originally (probably from 11th to 19th century) Nativity of the Holy Virgin Orthodox Church was located on the castle. In official documents it was being named “the castle’s”. In 1562 the temple was moved on the present place (ancient Staromiejska Street) along with the body of its’ founder – duchess Wassa Michajłowna and with miraculous icon of Holy Mother of God “Odigitria”, which (according to the tradition) was given by the queen Helena. Even now the icon is attracting thousands of pilgrims. Since 40’s of 18th century (after rebuilding ) the temple has got a current shape. At the end of 18th century on the northern side of the temple, was added altar. Free-standing belfry of the temple was built in 17th century. During the warfare in July 1944 suffered altar part of the Orthodox Church. In 1968 the temple was redecorated. Since 1998 there has been Orthodox bishop’s residence near Nativity of the Holy Virgin Orthodox Church.
