Nashik is believed to be the place where Shoorppanakha tried to seduce Lord Ram. Though Nashik doesn’t have the characteristics of an established hill station, it is located comfortably in the basin formed by the high Sahyadri Hills. True to the city’s holy image, it is home to one of India’s 12 holy Jyotirlingas & the largest congregation of people at the Kumbh Mela.The city with remarkable structures of historical importance it is interspersed by temples, forts, and industrial units. Besides, it is India’s top wine growing region, which gives birth to a very nice little wine – tourism industry. Make sure to have a cycle ride to explore vineyards while visiting Nashik.

HistoryEdit

Nashik has a personality of its own, due to its mythological, historical, social and cultural importance. The city is situated on the banks of the Godavari River, making it one of the holiest places for Hindus all over the world. Nashik has a rich historical past, as the mythology has it that Lord Rama, the King of Ayodhya, made Nashik his adobe during his 14 years in exile. At the same place Lord Laxman, by the wish of Lord Rama, cut the nose of “Shurpnakha” and thus this city was named as Nashik.The 2000-yr-old Pandavleni caves, built by the Jain kings, are located on a tableland atop the Trivashmi Hill. There are around 24 caves situated here that once formed abode to the Jain saints. The caves lodge idols of Buddha, Jain Teerthankara Vrishabhdeo, Veer Manibhadraji and Ambikadevi and the icons of Bodhisatva. There are attractive water tanks that are very skillfully chiseled into the rock. It is situated 8 km south of Nashik.

By Air : Mumbai Chatrapati Shivaji International airport, which is 171 km away from Nashik, is the nearest airport. All the major airlines have service from Mumbai to all major cities in India and many cities abroad including Singapore, Hong Kong, Colombo and gulf countries. Taxis are available from Mumbai to Nashik and costs about Rs 4,000.

By Train : Nashik Road railway station is about 9 km away from Nashik city center. This station is directly connected with Mumbai (Panchavti Exp) and regular train services are available from Delhi (Mangala Ldweep), Kolkata (Gitanjali Exp) and Hyderabad (Devagiri Exp). Taxis are also available at the railway station and fare is about Rs 200 to the heart of the city.

By BUS : Nashik is well connected to all neighboring cities by Government owned buses. Private A/C and non A/C deluxe buses are also available from Nashik to many cities in the State including Mumbai and Pune. Bus fare is about Rs 3 to Rs 4 per head.

By Other : Auto rickshaws are also available in the city of Nashik, and these run on meter. Auto fares normally start off with Rs 15 for the first couple of kilometers and Rs 8 for each additional kilometer. Auto rickshaws are the safest mode of travel in Nashik and night rates are not applicable in Nashik.

Rath Yatra ; Venue:  Nashik ; Period :  Chaitra Purnima ; Details:  A festival called Janmotsava is celebrated at Sansthan Shri Kalaram Mandir, Panchavati, Nashik every year. The festival, which spans 15 days begin from the first day of Chaitra till Chaitra Purnima. The Janmotsava, which is witnessed by thousands of pilgrims, takes place exactly at 12 Noon.The main attraction of the festival is the rathyatra that takes place on the second day, in which Shri Ram rath and Garuda rath moves through the Nashik city.
