Nannaj – Great Indian Bustard Sanctuary is a small town near Solapur. It is also known as “The Indian Savanna”. Because of the presence of certain rare inhabitants in its surroundings; there is a wild life sanctuary. One of the most endangered species of bird, Great Indian Bustard (Choriotis Nigriceps Vigors) , has a sanctuary named after him, “The Great Indian Bustard (GIB) Sanctuary”, at Nannaj 22 kms from Solapur in Maharashtra. One of the very very few places, where these species can be seen. Nannaj is home to the Great Indian Bustard (GIB) sanctuary. It is one of the largest birds in India and by far one of the most endangered. The Great Indian Bustard is also called as Maldhok in Marathi is one of such rarest birds of Indian Sub continent. We can find this rare species at Nannaj. The Sanctuary covers an area of 8000 sq. kms. and is easily accessible by road. There are about 350 GIB’s surviving in India and around 25 of them are found in Nannaj. The Bustard though is not the only reason for one to visit this enchanting place. Nannaj presents a very unique landscape, more resembling the plains of African Savanna than the typical tropical forests of India.

BUS : Solapur is very well connected by roads and is 45 Kms from Tuljapur, 73 Kms from Pandharpur, 95 Kms from Paranda, 274 Kms from Pune, 300 Kms from Hyderabad. You can take Solapur to Kolhapur buses and various other cities. Public transport in Solapur is primarily provided by buses operated by Solapur Municipal Transport (SMT). It is interesting to note that the only place other than Mumbai where double decker buses are in use is Solapur.

Train : Solapur falls on the rail line connecting Hyderabad to Mumbai. It is around 400 Kms from Mumbai. Regular trains are available to Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad and other parts of the state and country.

Air : The nearest International Airport from Solapur is Pune International Airport, Maharashtra, roughly four hour drive from Solapur. Pune International Airport is well connected to major cities by flights to Nagpur , Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad & other destinations.
