Nandankanan is a national park located in the State of Orissa. Nandankanan is the first zoological park to become a member of World Association of Zoos and Aquariums. It was established in 1960 and serves as an open sanctuary as well as a zoo. It also has a botanical garden that is located within the premises. The national park is known for its population of white tigers and it is one of the few zoos in the country to have a substantial white tiger population. It is also home to 43 different species of mammals and 23 varieties of reptiles. The zoo is also known for its breeding program. The program has been successful in breeding panthers, tigers, gharial crocodiles and other animals. A unique feature of the zoo is the adopting an animal program. People can adopt six endangered species such as white tiger, orangutan, rhinoceros and a few other animals. The zoo also enjoys the distinction of having the lowest mortality rate for animals in captivity. Along with the successful breeding program, The National Park is one of the most successful in the country. The State of Bank of India is among the first to have adopted an animal. And it is continuing to support the program.

Nandankanan Zoological Park is located 20 kms ahead of the capital city Bhubaneswar in Orissa. Acclaimed as one of the most wellmaintained zoos in India, Nandan Kanan is an open-air zoo carved from natural forests. The zoo also includes a botanical garden. Both are separated by a lake and spread over a scenic landscape of several hundred acres. The mascot is the white tiger, the zoo having the distinction of breeding them in captivity. Because of amenities such as wheelchairs and battery operated vehicles, the zoo bustles with visitors. However, the botanical garden side is an oasis of calm and serenity.

By Bus : There are frequent buses that are also available from Bhubaneshwar to the park. Buses are cheap and be found at the main bus terminus. They usually cost around Rs 50. They maybe crowded and carrying luggage may be difficult.

By Taxi : There are prepaid taxis that can be booked from the airport which travel to the park. This is a good option as they are comfortable and quick. They usually cost around Rs 500 to the park.

By Other : Auto rickshaws are another option that is available to the traveler. Autos can be found outside both the airport and the railway station. They are cheap and can move around the traffic easily. However they are not comfortable for long journeys and cannot carry large amount of luggage. They usually cost around Rs 200 for the trip.
