Namakkal is one of the major tourist destinations in Southern India. An often visited temple town, Namakkal is frequented by patrons and devotees alike, with plenty of tourists thrown in the mix too. The temple town of Namakkal has a lot to offer to tourists, given its ancient and age old temple and countless nearby tourist attractions. Namakkal is mainly famous for a temple located in the heart of the town – The Lord Anjaneya Temple. This temple, which is almost one thousand and five hundred years old (1500 years), lies below the Namakkal fort, with a huge statue of the main deity Anjaneya (or Hanuman) acting as a guardian to the fort. This huge statue lies directly across the street from a Lakshmi Narasimha Temple, facing the main deities from the other temple. The statue is eighteen feet tall and towers over the rest of the region. Namakkal is a historic region and you can roam around in awe of the well preserved temples and towers surrounding the temple town. There are two cave temples in the town of Namakkal that you can visit which are dedicated to Narasimha Swamy and Ranganatha Swamy. Another famous tourist spots in Namakkal I the Namakkal Fort, which is one of the safest forts in the Indian subcontinent. The fort is located atop a massive rock.

Namakkal is a city and an administrative district, Namakkal is one of the most popular tourist destinations of the southern part of India. Located in Tamil Nadu Namakkal offers a wide range of attractions to people from varied interests. The city is renowned for its well-maintained infrastructure and environment. It is famous as a historical city. Namakkal has many temples and shrines for a tourist to offer for a visit. The Anjaneyar Temple, Narasimhar Temple, Koolippatti Murugan Temple, Thathagiri Murugan Temple, Thiruchengodu Ardhanareeswarar Temple and Muthugapatty Periya Swamy Temple are some of the famous atrractions. The Namakkal Dhurgam Fort is another tourist hotspot. The Rockfort and Naina-Malai are another popular tourist hubs. The city derives its name from Namagiri, which is a single rock formation at the centre of the city. Namakkal was a part of Kongu Nadu region of Tamil Nadu. The city was ruled by King Gunaseela of Adiyaman clan. It has numerous historical relics such as the Ranganatha Swamy Temple and Narasimha Swamy Temple built by King Gunaseela. His marriage relations with the Pallava Dynasty resulted in the architectural influence. Later the kingdom was overrun by the Cholas and followed by the Hoysalas till the 14th century. This was followed by the Vijaynagar Kings, Madurai Nayakas, Sultans of Bijapur, Golkonda Mysore Kings, the Marathas, Hyder Ali and finally by the British. Each of these rulers had left their mark on the region’s culture.

By Air : The nearest airport is the Tiruchirapalli Airport, located seventy four kilometers away (74 km). Buses from here will be available to Namakkal and local flight charges will range around Rs 1500 to 6000.
By Train : A new broad gauge railway line is being constructed near Namakkal, and rail service will be available quite soon. This broad gauge line will connect the cities of Erode, Salem, Karur and Madurai with the town of Namakkal and commute can be made easier this way. Train fares will range around Rs 150 to 500 , depending on the class of travel. Salem and Karur have the nearest railway junctions to Namakkal and trains to all major cities in the state are available from here.
By Bus : Namakkal has a large network of buses plying to every major and minor city in the state of Tamil Nadu. It also has buses plying to the nearby states of Karnataka and Kerala. Buses from Namakkal are regular deluxe and semi deluxe buses which do not cost much. You can reach Namakkal through regular buses from Karur, Dindigul, Salem, Erode and Tiruchirapalli. You can also reach Namakkal through buses from Coimbatore, Palakkad, Thirunelveli and other neighboring areas. Bus fares are normally minimal, and the fares may range anywhere from 50 Rs to 300 Rs, depending on the distance covered.
