Naina Devi Temple, Nainital formed after the eye of Goddess Sati fell on this part of land. The temple dates back to the ancient days of history when Sati, the wife of Lord Shiva burnt herself to death unable to bear the insult when her father King Daksha refused to invite Sati and Lord Shiva for a Yagyna. Devastated and grief-stricken, when Lord Shiva was returning to their abode with her body in his arms, her body parts fells on various spots on earth. The red roofed Naina Devi temple is dedicated to this incident. Two eyes or Netras depicts the deity of the temple. Maa Naina Devi is accompanied with Lord Ganesha and Mata Kali in the temple.
