Nagarjunakonda is a historical Buddhist town, now an island located near Nagarjuna Sagar in Guntur districtin the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.A city flourished around 1,800 years ago at Nagarjunakonda, the Hill of Nagarjuna. A great religious and educational center of Brahmanism and Buddhism, one of the names it had then was Vijayapuri, after king Vijaya Satakarni of the Satavahana dynasty. Nagarjunakonda at present is an important archaeological site where great pieces of architecture of Buddhist civilization were excavated. Numerous relics and objects, which bore religious and historical importance, have been excavated. The marvelous sculptures found from the site are preserved in the museum. There is a museum at the center of man made dam Nagarjuna Sagar near the Nagarjunakonda. The museum is a treasure house of relics of Buddha and Buddhist culture, stone images and encrypted panels. Mahachaitya is the main stupa of the museum which contains relics of Buddha. Nagarjunakonda is a home to the massive dam near Nagarjuna Sagar which is infact a great attraction to the tourists. Other attractions near Nagarjunakonda are the Ethiopothala waterfalls. This spot is picturesque and greenery prevails at the backdrop of the waterfall. By Air : The nearest airport is located at Hyderabad and it is situated around 140 km from the town. Hyderabad Airport is well connected with the rest of the country and also receives many international flights. For those who are arriving by air this is the best option. Taxis are available from the airport to Nagarjunakonda. Prepaid taxis are the best option and they charge around Rs 2,000 for a trip. A/C taxis are also available, and they are a good option. SUV’s can also be hired for those who are travelling in groups.
By Train : Nagarjunakonda Railway Station is well connected to the rest of the State and there are frequent rail services from most of the main cities in the State. Trains are a good option as they are cheap and a comfortable way to travel. Tickets cost between Rs 250 and 400 for non A/C compartments from most of the important cities in the State.
By Bus : Buses are also available from cities such as Hyderabad, Tirupathi, Nizamabad and some other cities. Government buses are cheap and they are a good option. However they are generally crowded and not comfortable.
