Muthanga / Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is the abode for a wide variety of wildlife and beautiful birds. Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary originated in the year 1973. Later in 1992 it was brought under the Project Elephant. Wayanad Wild Life Sanctuary in Muthanga has fair numbers of the magnificent mammals (elephants). Project Elephant was proposed to prevent ruthless hunting of the tuskers for commercial reasons.The Wildlife Species that could be spotted during Wayanad Wildlife Safari include Elephants, Gaur, Cheetal, Dholes, Jackals, Tigers and Otters. The avifaunal species that could be spotted on a Wayanad wildlife safari include Crested Serpent Eagle, Crested Hawk Eagle, Malabar Grey Hornbill and King Vultures. Common leopard butterfly could be spotted if you are lucky enough.

Muthanga / Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is established in 1973, and is contiguous to the protected area network of Nagarhole and Bandipur of Karnataka on the north-east and Muthumalai of TamilNadu on south-east.The sanctuary is an integral part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, which has been established with the specific objective of conserving the biological heritage of the region. The sanctuary emphasis on scientific conservation with due consideration for the general life styles of tribals and others who live in and around the forest.
