The museum is situated near the Estonian border in the former harbour town Ainaži. The exhibition is housed in the restored servants’ house of Captain Veide. The principal of the old naval school himself, Swedish by nationality, Captain Christian Dahl, greets museum visitors, standing in the classroom by the blackboard, perfectly re-created as a wax figure.
The museum gives an insight into the way old sailing vessels were once built and launched into the water in coastal fishermen’s villages and the way our sailors sailed them in distant seas and oceans of the World.
One leaves this small, hospitable museum with a very special feeling – pride for the famous naval past of the Latvian nation and its strong and courageous seafarers. Following the visit to the museum it is possible to relax in the museum’s garden in the shade of hundred year old oak trees and to view an exhibition of old anchors.
Currently the museum collection stores more than 9000 items. The most valuable collections are maps of Ainaži, naval students’ diplomas, study notes, books, photos, navigation tools, ship building tools, items from sailors’ everyday lives, etc. The recollections of the children and grandchildren of Ainaži Naval School students are of special significance.
