Munnar is a town in the southwestern state of Kerala, India. Munnar is situated around 1600 m above sea level, in the Western Ghats range of mountains and is a hill station. The name Munnar is believed to mean three rivers referring to the location at the confluence of the Madhurapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundaly rivers. Munnar, the beautiful hill station of Kerala, has been a favourite place of summer retreat of the British. The history of this place can be traced back to pre historic ages, although not much written records are available about the city, before the 10th century. Fishing of trouts is another major attraction of Munnar. The Devikulam Lake and the Gravel Banks are the places to visit for all those fishing freaks. If you want to take a break from sight-seeing and a golf enthusiast, then head towards the Kundale Club and High Range Club. The church of Munnar show case architectural brilliance and are the symbols of the colonial era. They are steeped in history and are have a lot of stories to narrate. Co-existing with the church is a temple and a mosque, a powerful statement about the secular fabric of Munnar.

By Air : Nearest major airport is Cochin International airport which is about 125 km away. Taxi services are available from airport to Munnar which cost about Rs 3000. Cochin airport is well connected to all major cities in India and many cities abroad.
By Train : Nearest rail head is at Angamaly or Alwaye, both are nearly 120 km away from Munnar. Angamaly is an important rail junction in Ernakulam – Trissur route and is well connected to all cities in India. Taxi from Angamali to Munnar costs about a minimum charge of Rs 2,500.
By BUS : Munnar is connected to other cities in Kerala and Tamil Nadu by state government public transport buses, but are less frequent. Many tour providers arrange packaged bus tours to Munnar from Cochin. The charges will be about Rs 1000 per head.

By Other : Auto rickshaws are another way of getting around the city. Most of them have meters and are relatively cheaper than taxis. They are fast and easy to find. Some autos may not have meters and the prices have to be negotiated in advance.

Thrissur Pooram Festival ; Venue: Munnar ; Period : May ; Details: This is one of the most momentous festivals to be experienced in Munnar. Towards the end of May, the local mahouts and their majestic mammals, the elephants, take to the streets carrying object symbolic of revered royalty. The caparisoned animals line up in disciplined dignity and stand in all their glory while the strong beats of the ancient Panchavadyam are played on conch, cymbals, trumpet and drums.
Attukal Pongala ; Venue: Munnar ; Period : February ; Details: This all-female affair sees the town’s womenfolk congregate to bake a pudding to be offered to the goddess of the temple, Attukal. The chief priest later comes to bless the temple by sprinkling holy water.
Nehru Trophy Boat Race ; Venue: Munnar ; Period : August ; Details: This extravagant affair takes place on the second Saturday of August each year in Kerala on the Punnamada lake, with spectator pavilions set up along the banks. The opening ceremony is a colourful spectacle of decorated floats, boats and traditional performances. Separate races are held for women and the festivities last throughout the day and late into the evening.
