Mumtaz Mahal (Jewel Palace) is a palace located in the Red Fort, inside Rang Mahal or the Color Palace. It is built entirely out of red sandstone. It is also known as the Jewel Palace.The Mumtaz Mahal was originally built containing six apartments that served to be the Sultan’s harem. It has now been converted into a museum and houses many artefacts belonging to yesteryears like the court textiles, weapons, carpets etc.

History of Mumtaz Mahal dates back to the time of Golden Era of India that is during the reign of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. It is also known as the Jewel Palace and is built of red sandstone.It was originally Shah Jahan’s harem (women’s quarters). It had a special room for Mumtaz Mahal who was the dearest wife of Shah Jahan among others.The Mumtaz Mahal was originally built containing six apartments that served to be the Sultan’s harem. It has now been converted into a museum and houses many artefacts belonging to yesteryears like the court textiles, weapons, carpets etc.It has many sections comprising of a section for Indus Valley Civilization, a section for Bahadur Shah Zafar, a section for the artefacts related to the 1857 war and many others.

Train : For foreigners, it’s easiest to make ticket bookings at the helpful International Tourist Bureau 23405156; 1st floor, New Delhi train station; 8am-8pm Mon-Sat, to 2pm Sun). Do not believe anyone – including porters – who tells you it has shifted,closed or burnt down and don’t let anyone stop you from going to the 1st floor of the main building for bookings. When making reservations here, if you are paying in rupees you may have to provide back-up money exchange certificates (or ATM receipts), so take these with you just in case.

Others : METRO The new high-speed metro line is the best way to get to/from the airport, and runs between New Delhi train station and Dwarka Sector 21, via Shivaji Stadium, Dhaula Kuan NH8 (Mahipalpur station) and Indira Gandhi International station (Terminal 3). Trains operate every 10 minutes from 5am to 1am. Cycle-rickshaws are still in use in parts of Old Delhi, though they have been banned in Chandni Chowk to reduce congestion. Let’s hope they’re not banned in other areas, as they’re the best way to get around Old Delhi – the drivers are wizards at weaving through the crowds. Tips are appreciated for this gruelling work.
