Mountain read necropolis is that the oldest necropolis within the town of Vancouver, British Columbia. Opened in 1887, it’s set west of Fraser Street between thirty first and forty third Avenues. It’s owned and operated by town of Vancouver and occupies 106 acres (0.43 km2) of land, containing ninety two,000 grave sites and a hundred forty five,000 belowground remains.
Only one existing necropolis within the neighbourhood, Fraser necropolis in New Westminster (established in 1870), is older than Mountain read. Once Mountain read necropolis opened in 1887, it supplanted burial grounds in what was selected Stanley Park that very same year because the city’s necropolis.
The original parcel of land is currently referred to as the “Old Cemetery” is delimited by Fraser Street on the east, thirty seventh Avenue on the south, thirty third on the north, and a row of tall trees on the west. Land on the north of this was purchased in 1901 for AN enlargement from the Horne family, that became the “Horne I Addition.” The Jones farm on the south was supplementary in 1910 because the Jones I and Jones II Additions, and in 1922, the Horne II was noninheritable on the west.
The “1919 Addition” may be a tract delimited by forty first and forty third Avenues, and contains several victims of the Spanish respiratory disorder pandemic that took several many lives of native residents. The ultimate addition is that the Abray Park Addition on the western facet, noninheritable in 1941 And named once a squatter UN agency antecedently lived on the land and tended an plantation and touched bovine there.
