Fifteen minutes northeast of midtown Reykjavík lies Mosfellsbaer town.
Mosfellsbaer offers beautiful nature, extensive sports facilities and well-marked asphalt-surfaced hiking and biking paths, which link up with the paths of Reykjavík. The town is home to Alafosskvos, a community of artists and artisans. In addition, Mosfellsbaer also boasts two popular horse-riding companies, two golf courses and two popular thermal pools.
Summer weekends in Mosfellsbaer are always busy, thanks to a popular organic farmers’ market, which is held in the Mosfell Valley. Fresh local products like vegetables, flowers, pestos and chutneys, and specially imported delicacies are on offer.
For something off the beaten path, just outside the centre of town, you will find Gljufrasteinn, former home of Nobel Prize-winning author Halldor Laxness. The home is now a museum dedicated to the writer’s life.
