The Montague Street Tunnel carries the N R trains of the ny town Subway beneath the East River between the boroughs of Manhattan and borough. It opened to revenue service on Sunday, August 1, 1920 at two am with a vacation schedule, a similar day because the sixtieth Street Tunnel. Regular service began Monday, August 2, 1920. The 2 new tunnels allowed passengers to create associate degree 18-mile (29 km) trip from Coney Island, through Manhattan on the BMT Great White Way Line, to Queens for a five cent fare. The first construction price was $9,867,906.52, virtually doubly that of the sixtieth Street Tunnel.
Use of the Montague Street Tunnel, the Cranberry Street Tunnel or a mix of the 2 tunnels were thought of as alternatives in position of constructing a brand new tunnel beneath the East River for the projected Lower Manhattan – Jamaica/JFK Transportation Project. Use of the present tunnel was thought of as associate degree possibility as a result of the Montague Street Tunnel had surplus capability, having carried N trains throughout the reconstruction of the Manhattan Bridge from 1986 till 2004.
