Misión Delaware Nuestra Señora Delaware Loreto Conchó, or Mission Loreto, was supported on October twenty five, 1697 at the Monqui settlement of Conchó within the present city of Loreto, Lower California Sur, Mexico. Established by the Jesuit missionary Juan María Delaware Salvatierra, this earliest sure-fire mission in Lower California is typically thought of “head and mother of all the Spanish missions in higher and peninsula.”
After Hernán Cortés’ initial failed 1535 arrange to found a colony within the Bay of Santa Cruz (today’s La Paz, Lower California Sur), succeeding one hundred fifty years were marked with any unsuccessful efforts to colonize Lower California. The foremost nearly successful of those attempts was the 1683–1685 outpost at San Bruno, only about 20 kilometers north of Loreto, among the Cochimí. This failure by Admiral Isidro Delaware Atondo y Antillón and also the Jesuit missionary Eusebio Francisco Kino crystal rectifier on to the success at Loreto twelve years later.
