“Merimbula with its great climate, pristine beaches and surrounded by forested hills, Merimbula is an ideal location for your next holiday or even your sea-change in life. Approximately 7 hours east of Melbourne, 6 hours south of Sydney, and 3 hours from Canberra, Merimbula and the surrounding area is the ideal destination for your next holiday whether it be with the family or just the two of you looking for that break away from every day life.
Swimming, surfboarding, kite-boarding, scuba diving, reef and deep sea fishing, dolphin and whale watching in season, walks along the boardwalk, in the bush or just sitting watching the pelicans and wading birds as they search for food along the edges of the lake or the beach are what may lure you to this area for your next holiday. Merimbula Restaurants & Cafés a’plenty, many golf and bowls clubs, some with views over the lake or Pacific Ocean offer themselves to the visitor and locals alike.
Magic Mountain, Potoroo Palace, the Aquarium, art galleries, craft shops, old furniture and wares, plant nurseries and gardens, the Sunday markets at Merimbula, Pambula, Wyndham and the big one at Candelo with many and varied stallholders with their wares, add to the variety of what you can do and give the visitor a chance to appreciate what the locals have at their feet all the time.
Sea-life including seals, dolphins and whales on their way north or south in the waters close by, offer the opportunity to observe these wonderful creatures at close hand. The fishing is great with many charter operators who can give you the benefit of their experience whether it be reef, bay or deep water fishing.
Wildlife abounds in the surrounding hills and mountains. Walks of all grades are here for everyone to appreciate and if you are unable to do the walks there are many tour operators who are willing to take you around in 4WD or small coach comfort to see the sights. Merimbula is the tourism hub of the far south coast of NSW or the Jewel of the Sapphire Coast as it is also known, which extends from the Victorian border in the south, to Bermagui in the north and to the foothills of the Snowy Mountains in the west.
Eden in the south with the deep water of Twofold Bay, the fishing fleet and the safe haven for yachts before attempting the Bass Strait crossing, Bermagui in the north where Zane Grey spent many fruitful fishing trips in search of the big game fish off the continental shelf and the lush pastures of the farms surrounding Bega the centre of the Bega Valley Shire give the visitor much to do while in the area.
Visit Cobargo, Tilba Tilba, Bermagui, Bega cheese factory, Tathra, Eden and many more towns which all have something to offer the visitor as further attractions of the area. History abounds with Merimbula being the centre of this great part of Australia which until recently was the Gold Coast for the Victorian visitor but has now been discovered by many others in their search for a part of paradise.
Just over two hours from Australia’s highest mountain in the Snowy Mountains can be a great days outing while still having the advantage of staying by the sea.”
