Consisting of two islands and a mainland coming together with the help of a couple of causeways along the Red Sea coast of Eritrea make Massawa, which has been an important port city for centuries. Massawa mainland where most of the local residents dwell is however, uninteresting from the tourist’s point of view. Nevertheless, the islands of Taulud and Batse compensate featuring popular attractions like the St. Mariam’s Cathedral, a war memorial, an old railway station, the Imperial Palace, the Dahlak Hotel and the largest natural deep-water port within the Red Sea.
Apart from being the main port city of Eritrea, Massawa offers plenty of bars and restaurants which are very well known in the region for the entertainment and nightlife they provide. Several regions around Massawa present numerous white sandy beaches which are clean and un-crowded, alongside plenty of opportunities for swimming, sunbathing, sailing, scuba diving and snorkeling.
