On April 7, 1788, forty eight men of the Ohio Company of Associates, led by Gen. Putnam, got wind of the confluence of the Muskingum and Ohio rivers. The location was across the Muskingum watercourse from Fort Harmar, a military outpost designed 3 years previous. In 1770, future U.S. President United States President, then a surveyor, began exploring giant tracts of land west of his native Virginia. Throughout the Revolutionary War, Washington told his friend, General Rufus Putnam, of the sweetness he had seen in his travels through the Ohio vale and of his ideas for subsidence the territory.
