Maniitsoq lies at the mouth of a fjord World, where Alpine peaks rise two kilometres straight out of the sea and there is an abundance of bird colonies, flanked by enormous glaciers. This is home to some of the harshest landscape on the west coast. Maniitsoq is a medium sized Greenlandic town, dotted with steps connecting the valleys and streets with the many mountain hillocks and rocky hills, which gave the town its name, “The Uneven Place.”
The area is known for the sublime heliskiing and fishing, and Maniitsoq is also the centre for whale watching, kayaking, mini cruising and bird colonies, and all year round it attracts adventure tourists at all levels.
Domestic airport, weekly ferry connections, fast boat route to Nuuk in the summer, convenience shops, continuation school and a museum are some of the attractions in Maniitsoq.
Air Greenland flies to Maniitsoq via the international airport in Kangerlussuaq. In addition, there are several flights a week from Maniitsoq to Nuuk and Sisimiut, and the town’s three settlements are regular ports of call for combined freight/passenger ships. Arctic Umiaq Line’s passenger ship, which sails along Greenland’s west coast, also often calls at Maniitsoq. Enquire at your travel agency for timetables and frequency.
You can see most of Maniitsoq on foot. The hilly terrain makes it a special challenge to move around the town. You can also get around by taxi. In summer, you can sail around in the archipelago by boat and in winter on skis and snowmobile.
You can stay overnight at a hotel, the Seamen’s Home, privately, in fishing camps, rent a cabin or holiday home or camp anywhere in the countryside, where the view pleases you most.
