Malda is a town that is situated in the Malda district of the state of West Bengal. The town is also known as English Bazaar. The place was established as a municipality during the 19h century and there are a few historical places that can be seen in the town. The main historical site in the town of Malda is the Jama Majid that was built during the year 1566. The Nimsari Tower is also a popular place in Malda. The town is also famous for its numerous plantations and these are worth visiting, if you are travelling to the region.The Raiganj Bird Sanctuary is also present in the district and this might be worth checking out. Many species of migratory birds can be seen in the place. The town also has a museum that houses a few old artifacts and also various archeological samples that have been found in the region. This is a good place for history buffs to visit. There are a few ruins that are located in the region and the primary ones are Gaur and Pandua. One can find many archeological sites near the ruins and these can be an interesting day trip from the town of Malda.

The history of Malda district basically tells the tales associated with the ruined city of Gaur and Pandua. The ancient city of Gaur is said to be in existence since an untraceable period. The first ever record of the city is found in the Hindu Puranic texts. The historical records of the city are however available from 500 BC, from the phase of Mauryan reign. Archeological findings also figure out that that the entire region of Pandua, then known as Pundrabardhana, and Gaur had also been a part of Gupta Empire.

By Air : The Bagdogra Airport, which is situated 16 kilometers outside the city of Siliguri, is the nearest major airport and you can opt for this if you are travelling by air.
