Malappuram – literally meaning “On top of the hills” is a picturesque town dotted with small hills, verdant greens & gurgling fresh water streams. Malappuram Located 50 km southeast of Kozhikode & 90 km southwest of Palakkad on the Kozhikode – Chennai highway NH 213, it was once the headquarters of the British troops. The city is divided into what is called Up hill & Down hill, with the Up Hill housing government offices & commercial establishments and Down Hill having the main market of the region. While here visiting the Malappuram Juma Masjid is a must as it is one of the oldest mosques in Kerala. For nature lovers a walk down Shanthitheeram – a riverside walk park is an ideal evening out & the Kottakkunu – known as the marine drive of Malappuram is a hill garden which houses an open air theatre, an art gallery & a water theme park too. The best season to visit Malappuram is during the months of September to March as the weather conditions are pleasant.

HistoryEdit

Malappuram has a rich and eventful history. The military headquarters of the Zamorins of Kozhikode since ancient times, this district was the venue for many of the Mappila revolts (uprising against the British East India Company in Kerala) between 1792 and 1921. Malappuram, literally a land atop hills, has contributed much to the cultural heritage of Kerala. A famous centre for Hindu-Vedic learning and Islamic philosophy, the temples and mosques of this region are well known for their spectacular festivals. Along with historic monuments and diverse natural attractions, a range of cultural and ritual art forms add to its value as a destination.

By Air : The closest airport is also located near Kozhikode, at Karipur and it is only 25 km from Malappuram. For those who want o travel by air, this is the best option. Taxis can be hired from the airport and they charge between Rs 7 and 12 depending on the type of vehicle hired.

By Train : The nearest railway station is located at Angadipuram, which is situated around 17 km from the place. There are a few trains that pass through this station. Auto Rickshaws are available from the station to Mallapuram and they prices are negotiable.

Thriumandhamkunnu Pooram ; Venue:  N.A. ; Period :  N.A. ; Details:  Thirumandahmkunnu Pooram is an important temple festival of Central Malabar. Thriumandhamkunnu temple is said to be one among the three important Bhagavathi temples of Kerala, the others being Kodungallur and Panayanarkavu. The Pooram festival is for seven days. Daily pooja attracts thousands of devotees. The famous Mangalya Pooja attracts thousands of young girls, who seeks fortune of a good wedlock.
