Featuring a nine-stage plinth platform, Maju Deval is an iconic Shiva Temple situated in the Basantpur Durbar Square of Kathmandu. One of the most popular meeting place in town, hours can easily be while away sitting on the steps of Maju Temple and watching an unending activities of fruit vendors, vegetable hawkers, souvenir sellers, taxis and rickshaws. The large triple roofed Maju Deval features erotic carvings on roof struts while offering great views of the city over the square. Erected by the mother of King Bhupatindra Malla in 1690, it displays a well known Shiva Lingam in the inner sanctity. Another small temple built in the Indian ‘shikhara’ style and dedicated to Kam Dev is located on the eastern side at the bottom of the stairway.
