Mahuli Fort, Thane is a beautiful mountain terrain located in the outskirts of Thane District of Maharashtra. The destination is located at the confluence of two rivers namely, Krishna and Yenna. Situated at a height of 2,815 feet, the destination is surrounded by dense forest, which is declared as a natural reserve.

HistoryEdit

The creator of this fort is unknown. In 1485 this place came under rule of Malik Ahmed who was the founder of Nijamshahi. When Shahaji Raje became the secretary of Nijamshahi, Adilshahi and Mughals of Delhi together tried to end Nijamshahi. In the year 1635-36, in difficult circumstances Shahaji Raje transferred himself with Jijabai and Shivaji to Mahuli. Khan Jaman, son of Mahabat Khan beleaguered this fort. Shahaji Raje asked for help to Portuguese. They refused and Shahaji Raje surrendered himself. Shivaji took this fort from Mughals on 8 Jan 1658. In 1661 it was given back and was won again by Shivrai. In treaty of Purandar, in 1665, Marathas lost these forts again. The Moghal sardar Manohardas Gaud was the in charge of this fort. He did much construction on the fort. In Feb 1670, Shivaji Maharaj tried to conquer Mahuli, but failed. Thousand of Marathas were killed by Moghals. It was a bad blow to Marathas. Even after this victory, Manohardas Gaud, the chief of the fort gave up his position and a new chief Alveerdi Beg was appointed. On 16 June 1670, after two months, Moropant Pingle conquered the forts and Mahuli, Bhandargad and Palasgad became part of Swarajya.

Taxi : Mumbai’s taxis are allowed into Thane. The prepaid taxi service available at the airport is the recommended hassle-free way of getting to Thane. The fare you pay at the counter includes the toll you need to pay when you leave Mumbai.

BUS : There are very few BEST buses that go right up to Marathon Chowk (It is known as “Teen Haath naka”)- 399 and 496 Ltd. Once you get off, catch a TMT bus or auto-rickshaw. From this spot Thane railway station is hardly 10-12 min walk if you go by following Gokhale Road, & auto should not cost more than 10-15 Rupees. BEST bus kinglong number 700 for Borivali, from Thane railway station east, frequency every 15 minutes. early bus 6.00am last bus 11.30pm Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) also called ST bus service from Thane railway station west frequency every 15 minutes. BRTS Buses originate from Cadbury Junction for Backbay and Nehru Planetarium. Most private buses from various parts of the country will stop in Thane. Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) buses will ply from various parts of Maharashtra to Thane. Train : Asangaon Railway station is 6 km away from Mahuli fort and is the nearest. This railway station is well connected to Mumbai and other cities in India. Tourist taxi services from railway station to Mahuli Fort village and it costs about Rs 200.

Air : Nearest airport is Mumbai Chatrapati Shivaji International Airport which is at a distance of 90 km way from Mahuli Fort.Pre-paid taxi services are available from Mumbai to Mahuli Fort costing about Rs 2000.

Others : Auto-Rickshaw : The most common way to get around in Thane is to hire an auto rickshaw. Payment is by meter. The amount to pay, however, is not the amount shown by the meter, but scaled up by a factor which changes whenever there is a rate adjustment. Check the tariff card for the right fare. Ensure Tariff card is stamped & signed by RTO. It is better still to know the approximate km to destination and negotiate the charge lumpsum before hand since the meters are invariably tampered with. e.g Thane to Sion is 15-18 km and fair charge would be Rs. 130-140 (latest rate) but the meter will show Rs.180-190. Thus fixing 140-150 before sitting saves you a lot of headache. Recently the government as made it compulsory for the auto-rickshaws to install an electronic meter which shows the amount and the distance traveled. However, it will take few months for all the auto-rickshaws to upgrade their meters
