Mahishamardini Cave is dedicated to Goddess Mahishamardini or Goddess Durga, Goddess Parvati’s warrior avatar who slayed Mahishasura, the demon who could transform into a buffalo at will. Mahishamardini cave temple lies past a boulder strewn path that leads right up to the rock cut flight of stairs culminating at the cave temple’s four-pillared front. The cave’s central shrine is dedicated to Lord Shiva while the two on its either side are dedicated to Lord Vishnu is his reclining form and Goddess Mahishamardini. It’s the Mahishamardini panel on the right side that is of particular interest. It depicts the combat scene where Goddess Durga, riding a lion, is fighting Mahishasura in the legendary 9 day fierce, one to one battle. Mahishamardini cave temple has been traced back to the time of King Mahendravarman and also contains inscriptions in Pallava grantha, naming the temple as ‘Atyantakama Pallavesvara-griham’.
