India /Madhya Pradesh /Khargone /Maheshwar

Maheshwar, the temple city, situated on the banks of the Narmada river where the pilgrims and holy men spent hours in silent meditation, the rows of poised women who carry glinting brass pots down to the holy, life giving river, and the commuter boat which cross and re-cross through the gushing waters are really wonderful experiences one cannot forget. With its tremendous temples and a salubrious climate, Maheshwar remains as a pleasant tourist destination, which can be visited any time of the year. Found its mention in the epics, this historic city was the capital of the great king Kartivarjun and its old name was Mahishmati. The literal meaning of the term Maheshwar means abode of Lord Mahesh, which shows this temple city’s close connection with the Lord Shiva. A glorious city from a very old time, Maheshwar’s temples and massive fort-complex presents an unusual charm of architectural grandeur.  The Ghats of the city, named after the various dynasties are the other characteristic feature that give Maheshwar a distinctive look. A true reflection of the rural India, these Ghats present a vivid picture of a perfect religious Indian city. Being an important Shiva religious destination, Maha Shivaratri is the main festival celebrated here during February – March. Best time to visit here is between October to March.
