Detail InformationEdit
Mahadev templeat Tambdi Surla is the oldest temple of Goa and the only surviving structure of the Kadamba Yadava dynasty. It survived from the Portuguese as it was situated next to a stream in the middle of a small clearing, hidden in a dense jungle.History tells us that it was built way back in the 12th century by the Kadamba Queen , Kamladevi. It is entirely built of grey black talc chlorite schist soap stone. Its weather resistant property makes the handwork adorning the walls of the temple still seem fresh! The temple is quite small and has a small passage way.According to Hindu mythology, “Nandi” is the bull which Lord Shiva rides and the gate keeper of Shiva and Parvati (Lord Shiva’s wife). We can find a statue of Nandi in the center of the main porch of this temple.
HistoryEdit
According to history researcher Prajal Sakhardande it was built in the 12th century by the Kadamba queen Kamladevi and is not made of basalt, as it is believed, but of grey black talc chloride schist soap stone. This makes the intricate handwork adorning the walls of the temple still seem fresh, as it is weather resistant. The temple was built by Hemadri, the minister of the Yadava King Ramachandra. The Jain style construction has led to debates about the origins of the temple, since the Kadamba Dynasty ruled Goa between the tenth and fourteenth centuries. The temple is built in the Hemadpanthi style from basalt, carried across the mountains from the Deccan plateau and carved craftsmen.
