Madurai is a temple town of India located in southern region of India. It is situated on the bank of river Vaigai and has been the kingdom of Pandya kings in the past century. The place has a great cultural heritage and strong mythological history to be passed on to the next coming generations. The place is more than 2500 years old.  The city is constructed in the form of a lotus and is known as lotus city too. There is a beautiful temple constructed by the Pandyan kings and Lord Shiva is worshiped here. It was believed that divine nectar was showered at that place and due to it the Jasmine flowers bloom in the place all around. Jasmine flower too has its foundation in the city. In 16th century, it was ruled by Nayal emperors and also Christianity has been cultivated in these regions too. The temples are surrounded by concentric circles all around giving the essence of the cosmos, henceforth it is also known as the cosmos city. It has several small temples all around, rather there is a temple on every cross road of the city. It is aptly known as the temple city of India. People from several different religions and cultures are residing in the place and all different kinds of festivals are celebrated here in unison. The best time to visit Madurai is from October to March.

Madurai is one of the ancient cities in Tamil Nadu and is now a major commercial centre. Although some 4,000 yeas old, the city is becoming reasonably modern and progressive. The pandya king kulasekara founded Madurai in the 6th century BC. It remained a major centre for Tamil culture and learning. The Nayak dynasty ruled Madurai for over 200year in waht was regarded as the Golden Age in the history of Madurai.. At that time, Madurai reached the summit of art, architectureand learning and got many magnificent temples and majestic buildings. You can still see the older part of the town that was built by the Nayaks.It came up within a souare enclosure and had narrow winding lanes running across in the pattern of a lotus. Today Madurai is a major tourist destintion where pilgrims and tourists come in equal number.

By Air : Madurai Airport is located about 10 km from the heart of the city. Taxi charges about Rs 150 to cover this distance. Madurai is connected to Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore and many other cities by air and the tickets are moderately priced. Chennai is the nearest international airport, which is connected to most of the Indian cities and international destinations.

By Train : Madurai has its own railway station which connect the city to every part of the country. Direct train services from Delhi (Thirukkural Exp), Kolkata (Kannyakumari Ex), Chennai (Vaigai Exp) and Bangalore (Tuticorin Exp) are available.

By BUS : Many private operators are providing deluxe AC and non-AC luxury coach buses from Madurai to many cities in the South India, including Chennai (Rs 500), Trivandrum (Rs 400), Coimbatore (Rs 350), Trichy (Rs 300), Bangalore (Rs 500) etc. Tamil Nadu State Road Transport Corporation buses connect Madurai with other local cities in and around. Super fast buses of TSRTC runs between Madurai and Chennai.

By Taxi : Public transportation in Madhrai consists of local taxis. And one can also a car or a taxi.

By Other : Auto rickshaws in Madurai do not run on meter and a fare should be negotiated beforehand. Day time travel will cost you around Rs 10 per kilometer and night fares are Rs 15 per kilometer. These are easily accessible, present in all major locations.
