Luanda is the capital and the largest city of Angola. Located on Angola’s coast with the Atlantic Ocean, Luanda is both Angola’s chief seaport and its administrative center.The Portuguese colonial city of Luanda was founded by the Portuguese explorer Paulo Dias de Novais in 1575.
The ancient heritage of Luanda is reflected in its several attractive historical buildings and churches that were built in the 17th century. The Sao Miguel Fortress housing the Armed Forces Museum is an important historic place and is regarded as one of the most famous landmarks in Luanda. In the year 1996, the fortress was declared a UNESCO Cultural Heritage site.
Its courtyard features an astonishing display of military armament dating back to the 17th century. Other important buildings that provide a fine example of the Portuguese architecture are The National Bank of Angola and Kinaxixi market building. Besides this, major tourist places of interest in Luanda include the slave museum called Museo da Esclavatura, the island of Ilha de Luanda, Mussulo Peninsula and the Kwanza River.
