Although Libreville is the capital and the largest city in Gabon, Libreville is still laid back in character where people generally take things slow and easy. The freed slaves in the past initially helped build this port town which is now home to over 578,000 people. Formerly named as ‘Freetown’, Libreville slowly grew as a trading post and an administrative center after independence in 1960. Largely composed of residential areas, the seafront displaying Gabonese sculptures is the primary attraction of this town where people regularly gather to relax by the Atlantic Ocean.
The Arboretum de Sybang at Nzeng-ayong in Libreville is a large tree sanctuary which is home to thousands of local species of flora. Apart from a few decent beaches in the neighborhoods, the Centre Ville is also a nice place to visit where tourists can enjoy some cool ocean breeze. Featuring a sea-port and an international airport, Libreville is conveniently accessible within Africa and many parts of Europe.
