Legon, a suburb of the Ghanaian capital city Accra, is situated about twelve kilometres north-east of the city center. Legon is home to the main campus of the University of Ghana. The word “Legon” is derived from the indigenous Ga language of the people of Greater Accra; NI-LEY GON (NI-LEY means KNOWLEDGE and GON means HILL) therefore “Hill of Knowledge”. Ghanaians also loosely refer to the University of Ghana simply as Legon. Legon is also home to Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School (PRESEC-Legon). Legon is adjacent to one of the most prestigious residential suburbs of Accra – East Legon and only about 20 minutes drive from the Kotoka International Airport.
The University has its own private elementary and middle schools known commonly as the University Primary and Junior Secondary School (UPS). Students who attend this school are primarily kin to the lecturers and workers of the University campus. Many of them go on to attend the University of Ghana.
