The Japanese assulted the town of Legaspi on December 12, 1941. They used these historic tunnels to store ammunitation during the period they occupied the city. On April 1, 1945 the city was liberated by the 158th Recumental Combat Team of the US armed forces. These soldiers were from Arizona and called themselves the “Bushmasters”. They took the tunnels about the same time they took the nearby airport.
