There are several picnic spots in the region and these are ideal for spending the day in the outdoors. You can also visit the old Buddhist monastery that is located amongst the hills of Lava. The Neora National Park can be reached from Lava and permits are available here. The place is situated at an altitude of around 2138 meters above sea level and the climatic conditions are pleasant for the most part. You can experience snow fall in the region during the winter season. Summers are mild and this the best time to visit. A refreshing cool breeze from the mountains can be experienced. The road to Lava might not be in good condition during the monsoon season and it is better to avoid visiting during this season. Winters are cold and if you are visiting during this period, it is advisable to travel with protective winter clothing.

Lava is a small hamlet situated 34 kilometres (21 mi) east of the town of Kalimpong via Algarah in Darjeeling district of the state of West Bengal, India. It is one of the few places in West Bengal to receive snow in winter. It is the entry point to the Neora Valley National Park from Kalimpong. The route to Lava is scenic with the change in vegetation from tropical deciduous to the wet alpine trees of fir, pine and birch. The verdant forests are a popular spot for picnicking, trekking and bird-watching. Lava has now become a favorite tourist destination for people living on the coast of West Bengal, and tourism has become the source of living for the inhabitants. Many small guest houses and lodges has been built including log houses or small huts built in the midst of the forest which a tourist can rent to experience the wildlife and a famous spot to view the sunrise. Another tourist destination near Lava is Rishyap just 4 km walking pathway with a view of Himalayan peaks.

By Air : The nearest airport is Bagdogra near Siliguri, which is at a distance of 79 km from Kalimpong. The taxi fare from the airport to Kalimpong is about Rs 1,500. This airport is connected to Kolkata, Delhi and Guwahati. International travelers can get connecting flights from Kolkata or Delhi. Both are well connected with many cities in India and abroad.

By Train : The nearest rail is New Jalpaiguri, which is nearly 67 km away from Kalimpong. Taxi cab will charge about Rs 1,500. This is well connected to most of the major cities in India.

By Bus : The Kalimpong city is well connected to other cities in Sikkim and the neighboring states by bus services. Private tourist buses are available from Kalimpong to Bagdogra (79 km) and to Siliguri (70 km).
