Dating back to the Ancient Greek era, Latakia is still an important commercial port city of Syria. Largely comprising of white stucco high-rising structures and streets lined with palm trees, Latakia is also home to the Tishreen University, which is one of the largest educational institutions in the country. Displaying a mixed population consisting of Christian, Alawi and Sunni inhabitants, Latakia tends to be socially progressive and liberal as per regional standards.
Located at a distance of 348 kilometers to the northwest of the national capital, Latakia is very well connected with Aleppo, Tartous and Damascus through train and bus services. Featuring a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters, Latakia displays some of the most popular Syrian beaches located to the north of the harbor. Along with many hotels, restaurants, resorts and shopping areas, Latakia is undoubtedly a favorite domestic and international holiday destination of Syria.
