Las Margaritas

Las Margaritas is a city, and the surrounding municipality of the same name, in the Mexican state of Chiapas. The municipal seat is located some 25 km to the northeast of Comitán de Domínguez, while the municipality extends to the east as far as the border with Guatemala. Part of the Lagunas de Montebello National Park is in the municipality’s territory.
The municipality reported a population of 87,034 in the 2005 INEGI Census, with 28,798 in the municipal seat. Of the total, 39,013 spoke an indigenous language. The municipality was created and the settlement given the status of a pueblo on 9 December 1871, by Governor José Pantaleón Domínguez. On 24 March 1981, under Governor Juan Sabines Gutiérrez, the municipal seat was given city status.
