Lal Mahal is a red brick building situated at Pune. Shivaji spent here most of his childhood. There are also four umbrellas on the terrace, which is the prime attraction of the Mahal. This is the place where Shivaji Maharaj cut Shaistekhan’s fingers when he tried to escape away from one of the windows of the Lal Mahal. Incidents from Shivaji Maharaja’s life are pictorially represented on the walls of this palace. There is also a garden dedicated to Jijamata, known as Jijamata Garden. Pune Municipal Corporation had renovated the Lal Mahal in the year 1988.

HistoryEdit

Lal Mahal (Palace), dating back to the year 1634, was constructed by Sahaji Bhonsale, Shivaji’s father. When Sahaji received territories in Pune from Bijapur Sultanat, he sent his wife, Jijabai, and his son to the city and got the palace built as their residence. In 1998, Lal Mahal came under the management of Pune Municipal Corporation and underwent large-scale renovation. Read on to get more information about the Lal Mahal of Puna, India. Safety / WarningEdit

  • While traveling from Pune to Mumbai beware of touts who induce you into cheaper travel. Rather take the Asiad buses from the regular stand at the Pune station or the crowded luxury buses which are safer options.
  • The auto rickshaw drivers can overcharge so ask them for meter readings and follow the rules of the meter while making payments. The city is heavily polluted in crowded junctions so avoid traveling in rush hours.
  • Do not trust strangers while traveling and avoid traveling out late at night in lonely areas, though Pune is relatively a safe city, and the crime rate is low.
