Lake Afton Public Observatory (LAPO) is associate degree astronomical observatory placed 9 miles (14 km) from Cheney, Kansas, within the Lake Afton County Park. It had been established in 1979 through the cooperation and support of Sedgwick County, the town of Wichita, and Wichita State University’s Fairmount Center for Science and arithmetic Education.Since then the Observatory has been operated by Wichita State University’s Fairmount Center with further funds from Sedgwick County for facilities. At the guts of the observatory could be a 16-inch (410 mm) Ritchey–Chrétien telescope. The observatory offers programs for the general public each weekend throughout the year (with the exception of Christmas and New Years Weekend) together with varied non-public, and faculty programs throughout the week.
