Ladakh Trekking is popular at Dras, mainly due to its rugged landscape. The Suru Valley, located close to the Dras town is a main destination for trekkers, who traverse along the sub range in order to reach this valley. Another trek route is to the holy cave of Amarnath, starting from Minamarg below Zojila, which usually takes 3 days and involves crossing of 5200 m high pass. The place also offers several shorter treks and hikes to the upland villages.

How to ReachEdit

Taxi : This place is well connected by road and is easily accessible by taxis from leh.

BUS : This place is well connected by leh .Himachal Tourism and State Transport Corporation along with J&K SRTC and several other travel companies run regular bus service to Leh.

Train : The closest railway station is Jammu, there are regular train services from Delhi and many other cities to Jammu railway station, from Jammu you can take buses or taxi ride to Srinagar and then to Leh. From Leh you can take bus or taxi to to Drass is around 60 kms.to west of kargil in Ladakh.If you are for more adventures you can also rent bikes, available on rent in Leh and will cost you anywhere between rupees 600 a day for an Enfield to rupees 300 for others.

Air : Nearest Airport is Leh Airport .The following airlines (Kingfisher, Jet Airways, and Air India) operate regular flights to Leh from Delhi, Jammu and Srinagar. The duration of Delhi-Leh flight is just an hour long. Better booked the air-tickets before 2 or 3 months in advance because during May to October tickets prices are very high due to heavy tourist influx. From Leh you can take bus or taxi to drass from Leh. If you are for more adventures you can also rent bikes, available on rent in Leh and will cost you anywhere between rupees 600 a day for an Enfield to rupees 300 for others.

Others : Trekking routes:

Day 1: 3 hrs from Sankoo to Umba. The trek is bad. you have to faced a stream midway
Day 2 : 10 hrs / 30 Km to Drass. The first stretch involves a tough climb from around all the way upto the Umba La Pass(14800). The 3-5 Km, downhill trek on the other side is relatively comfortable, though, you will come to a greenish valley. This stretch is quite easy. So is the gentle, 2 hrs descent to the Drass Valley. The village serves as a base camp for trek in all direction: within the Suru Valley to inner Ladakh and to Kashmir.

  • Carry woolan cloths, and neccessary equipment for trekking, some dry food, First Aid box, plenty of water and camera etc.

  • It;s a 2 Days but a difficult trek, especially when the snow either falls or melts or become slippery). There are buses from Kargil(and Padam) to Sankoo.
