La Oliva

La Oliva possesses an interesting artistic heritage. To safeguard the island from external attack, the Castle of Toston was built in the 18th century. Also prominent is the Casa de los Coroneles (Colonels’ House), a civil building from the 18th century which is remarkable for its splendid facade overlooked at the corners by crenellated towers.
As regards the religious architecture of La Oliva, we could mention the church of Nuestra Senora de la Candelaria. In the neighbouring villages there are a good many hermitages, among others, that of Nuestra Senora de la Caridad, in Tindaya; the hermitage of San Antonio, in Lajares; or Nuestra Senora de los Dolores, in La Caldereta.
As well as many other attractions, this district has valuable open spaces. The small island of Lobos, lying a couple of kilometres from the northeastern coast of Fuerteventura, was declared to be a Nature Reserve because of its valuable Habitat, where indigenous species of flowers grow.
Meanwhile, the Corralejo Nature Reserve has extensive beaches of fine sand, next to which stand imposing dunes.
