Kushinagar is a town located in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. This town is located near the country of Nepal, and it is a very important pilgrimage site. Many pilgrims flock to the town of Kushinagar as it is a popular Buddhist region where Lord Buddha is said to have attained Nirvana. Legend goes that Lord Buddha was fed some mushrooms or pork by a local and this made him fall seriously ill. He later attained Parinirvana in the region once he got over his illness. This town is thus known for being the final resting place of Lord Buddha. There are many monasteries and stupas in the region dated back centuries, and almost all of them are in ruins now. You can visit these monasteries during your trip to the town of Kushinagar. You can also visit the various temples that have been constructed in the region by many Buddhists, around these ruins by people from all over the world.The Mahaparinirvana stupa is a must visit location in the town of Kushinagar that many tourists, both locals and people from abroad, flock to. This site is located right above the spot where Lord Buddha is said to have finally rested. The town of Kushinagar experiences a sub tropical climate, very much similar to the climate experienced by the rest of the state. The basic seasons in Kushinagar are those of summer, winter and monsoon. Summers in the town of Kushinagar are very hot, and winters are cold. The place is best visited during winter time, as your sightseeing trip will be more fun this way.

HistoryEdit

Kushinagar or Kushinara (as it was called during the Buddha’s liftime) is a small town, 53km west of Gorakhpur. It’s at kushinagar that the Buddha attained Mahaparininirvana, a final liberation from cycles of life and death. During the Buddha’s lifetime, Kushinagar was the capital of mallas, one of the 16 janpadas (kingdoms). it remained an important city till 12th century, after which it went into complete oblivion. A large stupa was excavated hear in 1876. In the detailed excavation that followed, the statue of a reclining Buddha was found. Now Kushinagar is one of the four most revered Buddhist pilgrimages, others being Lumbini where the Buddha Was born, Bodh Gaya Where he found enlightenment and Sarnath where he preached his first sermon.

By Air : Flights cannot be taken to the town of Kushinagar directly, due to the lack of proper infrastructure or an airport. You can however opt for flights to the nearest airport, in order to reach Kushinagar from there by bus. The nearest airport to the town of Kushinagar is located in the city of Varanasi. This airport is a well connected airport and has frequent flights to all major destinations including Chennai, Agra, Mumbai, New Delhi, and even Bangalore. Flight fares from the city of Bangalore to the airport in Varanasi will range around Rs 3500 to 5500. Travelling through flights is the most comfortable mode of travel available. Flights fares will be quite costly, but you can reach your destination easily.

By Train : Trains to the town of Kushinagar cannot be taken directly. The nearest railway station is in the town of Gorakhpur, which is located at a distance of 55 kilometers from Kushinagar. Train fares will range from a minimum of around Rs 130 and 150.

By BUS : The town of Kushinagar is easily accessible through buses, trains and flights as it is a major pilgrim destination and one of the four main sites that Buddhists must visit. There are thus many travel options available that you can take up in order to reach Kushinagar.

By Taxi : Taxi are available to carry you to any destination in Kushinagar.

By Other : Auto Rickshaw, Tempo, Cycle Rickshaws are available to carry you to any destination in Kushinagar. Jeeps and elephants are available on hire basis to take the tourists inside the forest.

Buddha Purnima ; Venue:  Kushinagar ; Period :  April-May ; Details:  This festival is held here annually at Kushinagar on the day of Buddha Purnima (in the month of April-May) in the memory of Lord Buddha, which lasts for several days and is attended by thousands of devotees. Pilgrims come to Kushinagar to celebrate the three most important stages of Buddha’s life- birth, enlightenment & death on this day. The festival starts with a procession starting from Burmese Buddhist Vihar in the early morning on this day. This is followed by many other different rituals that are performed throughout the day.
