Kukke Subrahmanya is a religious destination and also a tourist spot. One will enjoy nature’s beauty and the treks through lush green forests and hills. lapped in the luxurious abundance of the beauty of the nature, the village of Subrahmanya, lies in the Sullia Taluk in South Kannada with a sanctity, which very few places can boast of. The village is on the banks of the river ‘Kumaradhara’. In the heart of the village, the temple of Lord Subrahmanya is located. Nature reveals herself in all her unhidden beauty in the rivers, forests and mountains which the temple is surrounded by.Subrahmanya has quite a few temples within close proximity, but the main temple is Subrahmanya Temple which houses the Snake God, Vasuki and Lord Subrahmanya. The temple is set against the Kumara Parvatha hills and pilgrims have to cross the nearby Kumaradhara River and take a holy dip in it before paying their obedience to the God. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Kumaraswamy came to this place after killing the demon rulers Taraka, Shoorapadmasura and others in a war; and Lord washed his Shakti Ayudha (a battle-axe in the shape of a bayonet) in this river. From then onwards, the river is known as Kumaradhara. Subrahmanya used to be called as Kukke Pattana in the past. In the ‘Shankara Vijaya’ Anandagiri observes that Sri Shankaracharya camped here for a few days during his Digvijaya (religious expedition).
