The Tanjung Aru Beach with its wide expanses of soft sands is the best place to relax and unwind.The restaurants lined on the beach serve some of the best seafood, fruits and beverages. The mighty Mount Kinabalu offers best hiking opportunities and from its peaks tourists get excellent views of the dense tropical forests. Besides this, other tourist attractions include visiting the floating village or admiring the architectural brilliance of the attractive mosques or enjoying swimming and diving at the crystal clear waters.

How to ReachEdit


By Air : The airport is 7 km away from the city. Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) (ICAO Code : WBKK) provides flights linking the city to other domestic and international destinations. It is the main hub for Malaysia Airlines and secondary for AirAsia which consists of two terminals. It is the second busiest airport in Malaysia after Kuala Lumpur International Airport and is one of the main gateways into Sabah and East Malaysia. Some destinations include : Bandar Seri Begawan, Shenzhen, Seoul, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Macau, Manila, Cebu, Singapore, Taipei, Kaohsiung, and other cities, both within and outside Malaysia. It is also a secondary hub for MASWings, which serves flights to smaller towns and rural areas in East Malaysia.

By BuS : There are two long-distance bus terminals.
1. South Bus Terminal, is across the road from City Park Bus Terminal and serves destinations south of Kota Kinabalu, Beaufort, Sipitang and Lawas.
2. North Bus Terminal, is in Inanam, 10 km to the northeast of the city centre. This terminal serves buses going north and east of Kota Kinabalu, including Mount Kinabalu, Sandakan, Semporna and Tawau.Bus 16c stops at terminal 2 (the Low Cost Carrier Terminal), right outside the north-most entrance into the terminal where all cars drops passengers off (there is no bus sign or anything though). The bus cost RM1.50 and goes to the Kota Kinabalu bus terminal, Terminal Wawasan. The bus only goes once an hour or so and the schedule is highly irregular. The last bus leaves at about 5:30PM-6PM.For terminal 1, Minibus No. 17, Kota Kinabalu-Putatan buses, will bring you to the city. Minbuses are available along the main road away from the airport and the bus stop is next to the footbridge. Cost RM1.50 each way, will stop you at the south end of the City Centre, at Terminal Wawasan. It is around 1 km to the centre.From Terminal Wawasan, you can take City Bus into the city centre for RM0.50.

By Taxi : These are hired by buying a ticket from the window on the Arrivals level, then presenting ticket to the driver. The standard rate from the airport to the city is RM30.

By Other : The only regular access to Kota Kinabalu by sea is from Labuan. The ferry service takes about 3 hours and there are two services from Labuan every day: 8.30am and 1.00pm. From Labuan, you can continue on to Bandar Seri Begawan in one day if you get an early start. A package ticket to Brunei costs RM56. See the Kota Kinabalu to Brunei in a day page for details. Ferries from Labuan docks at Jesselton Point Ferry Terminal on the northern edge of the city centre.

  • Chinese New Year ; Venue: Kota Kinabalu ; Period :  February ; Details:  Usually mid-February, enjoyed in the local Chinatown and in particular along the Jalan Gaya, with the eating of dumplings and traditional lion dances.
  • Sabah Dragon Boat Race ; Venue:  Kota Kinabalu ; Period :  June ; Details:  One of the big sporting events of the year, held at Likas Bay, hosting international dragon boaters. The traditional longboats come with obligatory dragon head and include a drumming coxswain.

  • Beware of pickpockets as Malaccais a major tourist city in Malaysian.
  • Beware of fake items, especially the marble souvenirs. If you buy from roadside sellers, most likely the items are fake and made of chalk instead of marble. Better to buy from reputable shops even though you have to pay more.
