Koggala is a sleepy town along the southwest coast of Sri Lanka. The nearby beaches and the museum of Martin Wickramasinghe are draws for visitors.
The giant and luxurious Fortress Hotel offering a famous $14000 USD + dessert seems almost misplaced. Prior to the Second World War, the lake at Koggala was used for seaplanes. After the outbreak of war, a water runway was demarcated and a flying boat base was established, it was the largest flying-boat base in the east.
