A regional commercial centre of the eastern region of Ghana, Koforidua is affectionately called ‘Koftown’ by the youth in this country. Located beside the imposing Obuotabiri Mountain, Koforidua settlement was originally founded by the Ashanti refugees in 1875. Recognized as one of Ghana’s oldest cocoa producing centre which later moved westward, Koforidua displays favorable weather conditions for the production of several food and cash crops. Famed for its Thursday bead market which draws buyers from all around the region, industrial activities in Koforidua include alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, textiles, crafts, pottery and ceramics.
Home to Akosombo Dam holding Lake Volta, which is the largest man-made lake in the World; other natural tourist attractions near Koforidua include the Boti Falls and Akaa Falls, and the fascinating Umbrella Rock. Providing comfortable accommodation options for travelers, Koforidua is conveniently just about an hour by road from the Ghana capital city of Accra.
