Kodungallur is located on the Malabar coast of Kerala in the Thrissur district, Kodugallur is located 29 km west of Kochi. The city of Kodugallur was once the capital of the Kulasekhara Dynasty who ruled some parts of Tamil Nadu between the 9th & 12th century AD. A city home to the lost port of Muziris which was a major trade center which was destroyed by massive flooding on Periyar river which is popularly known as “Vanchi” among the locals today. The Muzhri port has references & valuable mentions in the Ramayana, Mahabharatha, Chilappathikaram and Akananuru & in travelogues of Ptolemy & Pliny the Elder. It was also the same port where Thomas Apostle first landed to spread the faith of Christianity. Kodungallur experiences mixed climates of dry summer days and humid rainy seasons. The city also houses the Cheraman Juma Masjid which is believed to be the oldest mosque in India & the second oldest mosque where Jumu’ah prayers are offered.
