Knoxville National burial site could be a us National burial site situated within the town of metropolis, Tennessee, USA. Established in 1863, the burial site presently encompasses nine.8 acres (4.0 ha), and as of the top of 2007, had 9,006 interments. The 60-foot (18 m) Federal monument, that stands within the japanese corner of the burial site, is one among the most important Union monuments within the South. In 1996, the burial site was additional to the National Register of Historic Places as a part of a multiple properties submission for national cemeteries.
Knoxville National burial site was established by Major General Church Father Burnside, whose Union forces had occupied metropolis in Sept 1863 at the peak of the war. Burnside appointed the task of layout out the burial site to his assistant army officer, Captain E.B. Chamberlain. The burials ar restricted to veterans and spouses of veterans. When the war, the burial site solely accepted Union burials, though the burial site contains a minimum of one Confederate grave. The burial site is presently administered by Chattanooga National burial site, and contains veterans of each war since the war.
