Kearsarge or Kearsarge town could be a former settlement in Inyo County, California. It had been placed high on the east slope of the Sierra NV mountains eight miles (13 km) west of the contemporary city of Independence, California. Kearsarge was the name of the Mining District and therefore the mining camp, placed just under the twelve,621 ft (3,847 m) high granite Kearsarge Peak and east of the Kearsarge Pass. Kearsarge was named when the Union man-of-war U.S.S. Kearsarge, that had recently undone the Confederate ship, CSS Alabama, off the coast of France.On the facet of the then unknown mountain within the fall of 1864 5 woodcutters discovered a vein of wealthy silver and gold ore. The lads staked their claims to Kearsarge, Silver Sprout, and Virginia Mines, and mammary gland and shipped four heaps of ore to a mill in NV, receiving $900 plenty. The news of location of their mine leaked out, and therefore the Kearsarge Mining District and mining camp of a similar name was established high on the slope of the mountain below the mines.Several mine investors, purchased the 3 main silver claims, forming the Kearsarge company.
