Kanuma (鹿沼市 Kanuma-shi?) is a city located in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. The city was founded on October 10, 1948. As of 2010, the city has an estimated population of 102,825 and a population density of 210 persons per km². The total area is 490.62 km². The English translation of Kanuma is “Deer Swamp”. The town is along the way when traveling between Tokyo and Nikkō. On January 1, 2006, the town of Awano (from Kamitsuga District) was merged into Kanuma.
