Originally founded in the 17th century, Kankan is the largest urban settlement of mainland Guinea. Conveniently connected by road to Conakry, Kankan is the second largest city in the West African country of Guinea. Located on the Milo River, at a distance of about 550 kilometers from the national capital, Kankan is largely inhabited by the Mandinka ethnic group of people. Widely recognized in Guinea for its religious scholars and the mango trees, Kankan is home to the regionally renowned ‘Universite de Kankan’.
Featuring one of the oldest mosques within West Africa, other tourist attractions nearby Kankan include the Gberedou/Hamana UNESCO World Heritage Site. This spiritually significant sit at a distance of 40 kilometers to the southwest of Kankan supports unique architectural styled residential structures associated with the traditional Mandingo religious milieu. The sacred pools and the villages of Baro, Koumana and Balato where grand ceremonies are observed every year add to this charming cultural landscape.
