Kangerlussuaq is literally the gateway to Greenland and the international airport connects with domestic flights to the rest of Greenland every day. Kangerlussuaq is a former U.S. military base and today the town is the adventure centre for Destination Arctic Circle. From here begin dogsled expeditions, long trips on skis, kayaking, cruises, animal safaris, and of course trips to the ice sheet that stretches out like a low hanging cloud toward the eastern horizon. As an extra twist there are thousands of musk oxen in the mountains surrounding the town and an adventurous gravel road provides direct access to the ice sheet and there are amazing guided driving tours, hiking on the ice and even sleeping in a tent on the glacier.
Kangerlussuaq features Greenland’s international airport, the country’s only direct route to the ice sheet, the Northern Lights from October to April, rich wildlife, especially musk oxen and reindeer, and a unique military base history.
During the summer there is a flight from Copenhagen 6 days a week with Air Greenland. From Kangerlussuaq there are connections to the rest of Greenland. Privately chartered flights also occasionally arrive at Kangerlussuaq, from where a number of cruise guests commence their journey in Greenland.
You can also get around the settlement by bus, taxi or on foot and in summer also by mountain biking. The best way to discover the area in winter is in a four-wheel drive vehicle, dogsled, snowmobile or skis.
You can stay at hotels with several stars, in hostels, in huts, in tent camps or even put up a tent yourself where the view suits you best; at the edge of the ice sheet or with musk oxen as neighbours.
